Birch River

You won't need to pack a lunch on this trip! The Birch River is one of Manitoba's best kept secrets. Only a stone's throw from the Trans-Canada Highway near Prawda, this little river is almost unknown in paddling circles. The 20 or so Class I and II rapids on this section are easier than they look, and by the end of the day you will be shooting rapids like a pro.

Just when you are getting hungry for lunch, we pull our canoes ashore at the Pine Tree Campground. It has a little restaurant which is as pristine as the river itself, and features reasonably priced German cuisine including Weiner schnitzel, bratwurst, spatzle and sauerkraut, as well as more standard fare. Now that's roughing it !

Sandhill cranes and fisher have been sighted up close on this stretch of river.
